Mancomunidade de Municipios Arousa Norte was set up in 1974 and works as a regional public organization made up of four counties: A Pobra do Caramiñal, Boiro, Rianxo and Riveira. This area is situated in the west of A Coruña, with a surface of 245 square kilometres and has a population of 65 500 inhabitants, approx. The region is known for the large number and variety of its historical and archaeological monuments, sites and vestiges, from megalithic constructions to folk architecture and a heritage of folk traditions and beliefs.
The main aim of Mancomunidade de Municipios Arousa Norte is to consolidate the region as a distinguished and quality tourist destination in the national and international scene.
Important efforts have been made to enhance this aim, depending on Public Administration through an European Union funded Plan for the Dynamization of Tourism, implemented by Mancomunidade de Municipios Arousa Norte in 2002 and completed in 2006. During this plan, Mancomunidade de Municipios Arousa Norte developed different projects to diversify and enrich the tourist offer: arranging infrastructures to revalue them, creating new tourist products -as museums, footpath routes, etc.,- offering occupational training, preparing and publishing tourist guides; furthermore different actions of advertising and promotion were taken to make this tourist destination and its resources known.
Besides, Mancomunidade de Municipios Arousa Norte tries to bring its cultural heritage to the population by using new technologies. Its web site, http://www.arousa-norte.es/, has received the Best Web of Tourism Promotion of Galicia Prize in 2006. An interactive CD-Rom named “Antón o Mexillón” (“Anton the Mussel”) has also been also edited to promote the knowledge of the region among kids.
