ELIOS is the coordinator of the TiE project and is responsible for the technical development (3D models, communication infrastructure, game engine and mechanisms).
The mission of the
ELIOS (Electronics for the Information Society) Lab of the Department of Electronics and Biophysical Engineering (
DIBE) of the
University of Genoa is to exploit cutting-the-edge Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in order to implement systems and services widely usable and useful for the general public in its daily-life activities.
A major focus of
ELIOS is on culture and edutainment (education entertainment), sector in which we have made research and products since 7 years.
ELIOS has led the 5th FP EU IST E-Tour project (2000-2002), which has developed multimedia mobile guides on palmtop computers for tourists and mobile workers.
We have developed a city-wide educational wireless game for the city of Venice (sponsored by Telecom Italia Lab Future Center) on palmtop computers [F. Bellotti, R. Berta, E. Ferretti, A. DeGloria, and M. Margarone, “VeGame: Field Exploration of Art and History in Venice”, IEEE Computer, special issue on Handheld Computing, September 2003].
Other projects, at international and national level, involve multimedia systems (3D virtual reconstructions for movies, games and web environments), in particular in the field of entertainment and education
We have implemented a number of VR applications for the cultural and artistic heritage. Samples include 2 high-quality videos (1 stereoscopic and 1 mono) providing a historical reconstruction over the centuries of the Renaissance area of Strada Nuova and of Palazzo Ducale in Genova.
In the Road-Rider project, we have developed a 3D first-person videogame based on the Serious Gaming concept. It is aimed at promoting road safety among 14-18 year students. Regione Liguria is going to distribute it to over 100 higher schools.
ELIOS has been the technical leader of the Culture 2000
Chi:Kho project, that has developed an online environment where high-school students can interact with 2D representations of the local heritage of 6 European cities. ChiKho is aimed at promoting reciprocal knowledge of the artistic heritage among participants.
ELIOS has been involved in 5 IST European projects in the automotive sector in the last years, in particular in the field of configurable multimedia cockpits (on LCDs) and car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure cooperation.
ELIOS, lead by Prof. De Gloria, includes over 10 professors, post-doc and PhD students.
